Listening out for Hogwart's Express

March 2005

Testal’s noise and vibration specialist recently removed the noise monitoring station overlooking platform 9 ¾ at Kings Cross Station. The removal of the microphone and remote sound level meter saw the end of the two-year contract, which at its height, involved two sound level meters and four seismographs.

Prior to Kings Cross Phase II Enabling Works commencing, Testal undertook a series of background noise and vibration measurements at this historic and bustling station. Once background levels were established, further measurements were recorded throughout the construction phase to ensure that noise and vibration levels, induced by the piling works, did not exceed recommended levels.

Data from the sound level meters was sent via GSM modem link to the office where it was analysed and recorded in a detailed comparative report.

Although very specialist and sensitive equipment was employed throughout the contract, the sound of the Hogwart's Express steam train waiting at platform 9 ¾ could not be heard.
